About Perception Acoustics
Company Profile
Perception Acoustics is an Arizona LLC formed in 2005
to provide acoustical engineering services in the
areas of noise control and product development. We
are based in Tucson, Arizona.
Perception Acoustics focuses on consulting in
situations requiring a high degree of expertise in
physical acoustics. Whether in noise control or
product development, Perception Acoustics has the
skills and experience to find innovative and cost
effective solutions to acoustical design challenges.
Principals
Lance Willis, PhD, Principal Acoustical Engineer
Dr. Willis holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering
(1993), Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
(1995), and a Ph.D. with a Multi-disciplinary
Certificate in Acoustics (1999) from the Georgia
Institute of Technology. Graduate work, done under
Dr. Yves Berthelot, involved using laser vibrometry
to measure the complex dynamic material properties of
viscoelastic materials under varying temperature and
pressure. During this time he also worked closely
with Dr. Eugene Patronis in the School of Physics on
various loudspeaker and acoustical projects.
In 2000, Dr. Willis began work in Motorola's Advanced
Product Technology Center.
Projects at Motorola included the acoustical design of
portable radio products with respect to speaker and
microphone performance, sound quality, and operation
in wet and noisy environments, studies of rub and
buzz detection methods, managing the development of a
high efficiency family of speakers, and modal
analysis of microspeaker cones to reduce audible
distortion.
Dr. Willis is a member of the Acoustical Society of
America (ASA), the Audio Engineering Society (AES),
and American Loudspeaker Manufacturers Association
(ALMA). He has been awarded two patents for adaptive
equalization in behind the ear telephony devices.
